Weekly Market Update for 05/01/26
Valuable insights on the latest market price changes for eggs, butter, cheese, and cream products.
The spring flush is here! There is plenty of milk available and buyers are seeing attractive markets!
Eggs:
The shell egg market moved lower this week after holding steady for nearly three weeks. Demand has been lackluster as retailers continue to hold shelf prices. Suppliers have had to unload inventory at below market levels. This is the lowest the market has been in over 5 ½ years! We have a new supplier on cage free eggs with new inventory due in mid-week. Please reach out to your sales associates as prices are nearly $1.00/dozen lower! On the processed side, liquid eggs are unchanged but there are lower prices on whole frozen, as well as white and yolks. Sommer Maid 15/2lb liquid eggs (40300) are $10.00/case less than Papetti label!

Butter:
Trading was heavy to start the week as foodservice buyers covered final Mother’s Day week needs. The market is now at its lowest point since the second week of February. But will we stay in the $1.60’s or bounce back up into the $1.70’s? More than likely butter won’t remain low for long. We have attractive pricing on Cabot bulk salted (13008) and unsalted (12560) butter at below market levels. Beaver Meadows has had production issues the last couple of weeks. We will be short on their butter cups (13962) and 47ct continentals (9155). Please consider alternatives under Dinner Bell and Sommer Maid labels respectively. We have good inventory levels on Plugra 82% unsalted solids (13313). The Dinner Bell 2/5lb whipped tubs (13706) have been discontinued by the manufacturer and replaced with Grassland label (40464). Dinner Bell butter cups will be replaced soon by Grassland label as well. Still no firm ETA of when Sommer Maid butter cups will be available again.
Cheese:
The block market can’t seem to find much traction but is on pace to finish slightly higher for the second consecutive week. These levels are still very attractive to buyers. We are starting to see increases on imported cheeses such as hard Italian cheeses so stay ahead on your inventories. Check out the fantastic price on High Desert bulk cream cheese (14350). Inventory levels on of Cooper sharp white (code 01299) are good. The Land O’Lakes $.35/lb price increase went into effect 4/21 with any new orders placed on the retail side. This includes brands of Land O’Lakes, New Yorker, Alpine Lace and Naturally Slender. This is a good time to take a position to cover your needs leading up to Mother’s Day, May 10! We will hold off on the increase as long as we can.
Fluid Dairy:
Prices for May are slightly higher for heavy cream, while unchanged for half & half and sour cream. Cottage cheese is higher.
For the most complete lineup of dairy products, count on Sommer Maid for quality, consistency and value!
