Dave’s Weekly Market Update — December 1, 2023

Each week Honor Foods Dairy Specialist David Albert provides you with Dave’s Weekly Market Update, with some valuable insights on the most current market price changes on eggs, butter, cheese, and cream products.

Eggs:

The egg market is collapsing in its normal over reacting way. We expect more of the same next week.

Butter:

Butter rose this week which is contrary to historical moves after Thanksgiving. Only 6 loads have changed hands this week forcing the market up. The futures market is now showing $2.60 for January. I am very surprised by this but the markets have not been the same since COVID. I am really at a loss trying to gauge the market at this time. My gut tells me it should back down but I am not sure after this week’s trading. Might be time to get a dart board!

Cheese:

Both the Block and Barrel averages dropped this week. Please note the strength in the Barrels though. The close is higher than the average so it could rise next week. None of the markets had many loads changing hands at the CME.

Cotija for your Mexican customers – We are running it at .50 off per lb until the end of the year. It is the Angelita label and is packed 4/15 lb 1/4 wheels.

Cabot Cheeses:

Cabot once again is facing challenges and stopping production on basic food service cheddars, monterey jack, pepper jack, and muenster. We have a little left on some of these and are working on replacements for you. They have a history of giving no notice on this stuff thus leaving all of us in a bad position.

Cream Cheese:

There are big drops next week in this category after the correction in the butter market. One thing to note is that once again there are capacity issues and there have been many cuts in both the Sommer Maid label and the Schreiber labeled. This is predominantly in the 10/3’s and portion control cups. If butter continues to rise, cream cheese will rebound some.

Fluid cream:

Supplies seem to be strong unlike the last few years at this time of year, and prices have fallen some. We have both the Golden Sunshine and Sommer Maid brands for your holiday needs.
